In modern times, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens have become the most commonly used graffiti materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner’s consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Within hip hop culture, graffiti has evolved alongside hip hop music, b-boying, and other elements.

Brazil, Russia, India and China – better known by the acronym BRIC – have powered ahead economically over the past decade and are forecast to become much larger emerging travel markets. GDP growth in the BRIC countries, with a combined population of almost 3 billion or 40% of the world’s people, is expected to continue producing high single digit annual growth rates. Each market has an expanding middle and upper class as affluence increases. Goldman Sachs argue that the BRIC countries could be among the four most dominant economies by the year 2050.

In addition, several other smaller economies, including the Middle East, are exhibiting rates of economic growth significantly ahead of the current and forecast growth in more mature western economies. As a consequence most consumer goods and service sectors are targeting the potential of the new emerging economies for increased sales.

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority has revealed that it will participate in FITUR 2012 which takes place from 18-22 January in Madrid.

Choosing a portrait photographer

I’m sure choosing a portrait session can be a daunting task, especially when there are literally 100’s of photographers out there trying to attract your eye.

You’re looking for a style of portrait which will suit you, or the person you’re giving them to and create memories which will last for years. There are so many photographers out there all wanting to attract your attention, and with people following the latest camera or photoshop trickery trends I bet everything merges into one big mass of flashy websites blinking away at you. 

Personal style:
Everyone is unique and has different styles and tastes.  A good portrait photographer is one that is keen to get to know you and understands your personality and visions of the portrait.
What style of portrait do you envision?  Is it traditional, candid or romantic, or do you prefer an image that is more photojournalistic?  What style would best capture your personality?  Is the photographer flexible enough to experiment with lighting, poses, locations, etc?  It’s important to let the photographer know what you have in mind.

Retro, short for retrospective, or “vintage style” usually refers to clothing that imitates the style of a previous era. Most vintage clothing has been previously worn, but a small percentage of pieces have not. Referred to as deadstock or new old stock (NOS), they nevertheless sometimes have flaws.

Film photography is divided into three main categories : 35mm, medium format and large format photography. 35mm photography employs common Nikon, Minolta and Canon cameras. The film is approximately 36 by 24mm in dimension.

The next larger size of film is the medium format film, which is 6.5 cm wide. It comes in rolls, and is available in 2 lengths – 120 and 220. The two lengths represent different length of film, much like the 24-exposures and 36-exposures type of 35mm film.

Large format films comes in sheet form, rather than in rolls. They are used mainly by professionals, because of the extreme care it takes to load and handle the film and camera. It comes in two sizes – 4 x 5 inches and 8 x 10 inches.

Great idea! I’ve shot film for 20 years! Love it. I also shoot  digital. What fun. Let’s encourage camera artists to rediscover the joys of film and let the pros and cons fall where they may. I believe in using the best tool for the job.There’s just something about the tangible nature of film and the snap of a real mechanical shutter.

I am often described as one of the last living dinosaurs. I think the endless discussions about film vs. digital photography completely miss the point that they really are two completely different artistic media. True, both (usually) start with a camera, and (usually) end with an image on a piece of paper, but the technology and process for creating the image are completely different. I like the slow pace of working with film – 120 film in my case. It forces me to slow down and really think about what I want the photograph to look like – a quality that, in my humble opinion, is missing from a lot of digital work. I think my work is better for it.

The use of pepper spray has proven to be harmful to more than just those hit with it. At the University of California, Davis on Nov. 18, police doused dozens of seated non-violent protesters with pepper spray. Numerous cameras in the crowd filmed the incident, inciting an online outrage. The UC Davis police chief has been put on administrative leave along with two officers seen in the video thoroughly pepper-spraying the protesters. An apology from the university’s chancellor has done little to quell the Internet’s fury. Images of the cop casually pepper-spraying protesters have gone viral, with the likeness of the lieutenant spliced into other historical situations, can of pepper spray in hand. All humor aside, the university is taking the situation seriously, launching an investigation into the police department’s use of the force. Here, TIME looks at the prevalence of pepper spray in other recent protests.
